Josephine Baker was born in East St. Louis, Missouri in 1906, and after spending a short time in stage shows in New York with Noble Sissle and Eubie Blake, she went on to become an overnight sensation in Paris, France, where she maintained her notoriety throughout her 50 years of performing around the world, and was the favorite of artists and performers everywhere. She was considered outrageous, exotic, and beautiful. She was one of a kind. The Black Orchid captures the essence of Josephine in this delightful play.
