Amahl and The Night Visitors is Menotti’s timeless musical interpretation of The Adoration of the Magi by Hieronymous Bosch. It is the story of a crippled shepherd boy, Amahl and his Mother who live in poverty. Then one starlit night, some strangers appear at their door. They are the Three Kings who are on their way to Bethlehem. What happens next is nothing less than a miracle.
The work was first commissioned especially for television and was shown on NBC in 1951. Considered wonderful for both adults and children, it is a fine introduction to opera for all. The opera is sung in English and is a 60 minute gem presented in a single act.
