Provincetown Repertory Theatre presents Terrence McNally’s Master Class, directed by Bart J. Murell. Opera fans everywhere remain in awe of Maria Callas to this day. Probably the most famous diva of all time, Callas was to opera what Madonna is to pop music. Like all superstars, her private life came to overshadow her onstage performances during her life; but it is precisely for those performances that she is remembered and revered.
From October 1971 to March 1972, Callas (by then “retired” from the stage), gave a series of performances at the Julliard School in New York. Playwright Terrence McNally has taken one of those classes as the basis for his play. Master Class is many things – a tribute to Maria Callas, certainly; but also a warts-and all assessment of her career, an exploration of her often difficult temperament, a look at her loves and the pain they caused her, and a treatise on the importance of art.
