Island Players Theater presents The Smell of the Kill, by Michelle Lowe, directed by Kelly Wynn Woodland.
Take three delicious, malicious wives; add three miserable, unloving husbands. Shake (not stir) them carefully, and chill. That’s the recipe of Lowe’s tantalizing comedy. The play revolves around Nicky, Debra, and Molly, who have tolerated one another during dreary once-a-month dinners for years. Their spouses Marty, Jay, and Danny soon leave the women to themselves, as usual. On this night, it’s to play golf in the dining room. We hear their voices as they bellow orders and make demands. The women, having reached personal limits in each of their lives, exchange confidences for the first time. They’re shocked that they all share a secret: that all three marriages are on the brink of disaster!
But wait, there’s more! All three women are facing the challenges of their lives. Nicky’s husband has been indicted for embezzlement; Molly’s husband is stalking her, and Debra’s husband is leaving her for another woman. When the men accidentally lock themselves in a basement meat freezer, the women are faced with a life-or-death decision — should they leave the men “out in the cold”… permanently? Or will the chill of their relationships thaw out? One by one, the women make their choices, with more than a little help from one another.
