The Lady Aoi

Lady Aoi is a Japanese icon with its haunting theme and the character of the bedridden heroine who is at the center of the drama. This work deals with issues of mental illness, betrayal, memory, loneliness, physical pain, and escapism. Setting this classic Japanese work on a Latino performance group will also feature multimedia, including video, as well as live music, choreography, and dance/movement. Ttakes its message to a new level, reiterating its universality and opening up a multicultural dialogue on these humanistic themes. The abstract and surreal nature of Mishima’s writing and imagery explore darkness as beauty and obsession as love.
