About the Show
María la O is a zarzuela or sainete lírico, a form of Spanish operetta, with music composed by Ernesto Lecuona and a libretto by Gustavo Sánchez Galarraga. The story is set in 19th-century Cuba and follows the life of María la O, a mulatto courtesan, who is pursued by several suitors, including the wealthy Spanish landowner Fernando de Alcázar. The plot thickens as María la O becomes embroiled in a series of romantic and tragic events, culminating in a dramatic and tragic conclusion. The zarzuela is known for its complex characters, social tensions, and the use of dance and music to enhance the storytelling. It is considered one of the most popular zarzuelas in Cuba and is celebrated for its musicality and dramatic flair. A gem rarely performed (in original Spanish). Full orchestra, with original Afro-Cuban dances, talented artists and great singers.
