The letters of Bess Steed Garner reveal the life a privileged woman, making her life in Dallas during the early 1900’s. Inspired by the life of the author’s grandmother, Bess Walcott Kendall Jones, A Woman of Independent Means chronicles the life of a feisty young woman who inherits a legacy of wealth and an independent spirit. Her wealth allows her to live easily, but she is not immune to life’s greatest tragedies. Her mother dies when she is just a young bride, her daughter is hit by car and endures a long painful recovery, the house she and her husband carefully built burns to the ground, her husband dies during an influenza epidemic, and her eldest son dies shortly after her husband’s death. Her letters reflect her passion, confidence, and intelligence as she writes about all of life’s challenges and joys: love, marriage, motherhood, travel, death, business, and family.
