Laundry and Bourbon & Lone Star

About the Show

Come visit the one-horse town of Maynard, Texas – where the women get drunk during the day, the men get drunk at night, and nobody has any secrets (at least not for long). The North Stage Players present two companion one-acts, both by James McClure.

Laundry and Bourbon takes place during a hot summer afternoon on the front porch of Roy and Elizabeth, where Elizabeth and her friend Hattie while away the time folding laundry, watching TV, sipping bourbon and Coke, and talking about the many secrets that are so much a part of small-town life. They are joined by the self-righteous Amy Lee, who can’t resist gossip. Through it all, Elizabeth’s inner strength and quiet understanding of the turmoil which has beset her husband becomes apparent; although he is wild and unfaithful, he needs her and she loves him.

The second part of the double-header, Lone Star, takes place in the cluttered backyard of a small-town Texas bar. Roy, a brawny, macho type, is back in town after a hitch in Vietnam. Joined by his younger brother Ray (who worships him), Roy tells tales of his military and amorous exploits. With the arrival of Cletis, the underpinnings of Roy’s world begin to collapse, as it gradually comes out that Ray slept with his brother’s wife during his absence, and – horror of horrors – has just demolished his cherished Thunderbird. But despite it all, the humor of the play never lapses, and all ends as breezily and happily as it began.

Opening night, March 23, is “Industry Night” — anyone in the theatrical arts gets in for 50% off a single ticket, or may receive 2-for-1 tickets. Whether you’re a High School thespian or a regular at the DCPA, all those who are involved in theater are welcome!

Due to the nature of the show and the use of some strong language, this production may not be suitable for small children.
