King of Coons is a searing drama based on the life of the first black movie star Lincoln Theodore Perry, aka “Steppin Fetchit.” The play begins in 1929 on the hollywood set of the making of Cotton Patch Love, where the Shakespearian-trained Grover Jefferson Ulysses Washington Picket is cast as a slow talkin’, slow walkin’ laconic black man. This character gives birth to the persona of “Cotton Pickett,” and soon the character makes Picket the most popular African American star of his era.
