BMH Shift in associaton with Volcano and Art of Time Ensemble presents a vaudeville show with a twist: Variété, directed and emcee’d by award-winning theatre director (and artistic director of Volcano) Ross Manson. Consulting director is the award-winning Eda Holmes. Musical director is acclaimed concert pianist (and artistic director of Art of Time ensemble) Andrew Burashko. Together these three have formed BMH Shift for the production of this extraordinary vaudeville.
In 1977, Argentinian composer Mauricio Kagel, living in Germany, composed a piece of music in eleven movements called Variété. Kagel – along with such icons as Boulez and Ligeti – is regarded as one of the most important composers of the latter half of the 20th century, and arguably as the father of experimental Music Theatre. This production will be Variété’s North American premiere, and it is timed to coincide with Kagel’s visit to Canada in January, 2004.
