Based on Gogol’s wildly imaginative fiction and set to the marvelously textured music of Shostakovich, The Overcoat also uses aesthetic inspiration from such revolutionary artists as Charlie Chaplin and Fritz Lang–and a cast of 22 actors on a set two stories high–to create an entirely fresh experience of music theater. In The Overcoat, a simple man’s life takes on a brilliant glow when he gets a fashionable new coat, but his desire to be accepted begins an unstoppable spiral of lust, envy, and exquisite madness.
