Back of the Throat

About the Show

Thick Description and Golden Thread Productions present the world premiere of Back of the Throat, by Yussef El Guindi, directed by Tony Kelly.

The play begins with an innocuous Homeland Security investigation, and quickly moves into a much more subversive discovery of fear, race, and the engine of suspicion. Following a heinous terrorist attack, Khaled is visited by government agents in ‘a friendly inquiry.’ The questioning soon devolves into a chilling full-blown examination of Khaled’s presumed ties to the attackers. Strikingly observed, surreal and comic, Back of the Throat sees facts, evidence and (mis)perceptions distorted into truth, filtered through notions of cultural ‘otherness’ and stereotypes of the accuser and the accused. In surprising and theatrical ways, we see how we create our enemies.
