An enchanting waltz by moonlight, Sondheim’s most beautiful musical celebrates every nuance of love, from the tender blossoming of inexperience to the startled rekindling of long-forgotten passions. This lush three-quarter time tribute to Ingmar Bergman’s only film comedy, Smiles of a Summer Night, presents a 1913 Sweden suffused with passion and possibility. Over the course of one libidinous weekend at a country estate, the strands of desire entwine a host of unsuspected guests, including an aging lawyer, his teenage trophy wife, brooding son, and sly mistress, forming surprising bonds for each would-be lover. Set to Sondheim’s lilting score, and Hugh Wheeler’s book, A Little Night Music combines the humor and sweet melancholy of a summer night smiling on the very young, the very foolish, and the very old.
