About the Show

"Slap Ass Friday" is a puberty play that follows Kay as she stumbles, stretches, and grows into a child caught in the messy transformation into womanhood. The story begins on “Slap Ass Friday,” a real middle school ritual where girls were slapped on the butt as sport. With humor and heart, Kay navigates the chaos of adolescence and early womanhood the only way she knows how: by moving through it. Written and performed by Kaitlyn Gonzalez and directed by Mary Tomei, the piece draws from two years of collected stories from women in Kaitlyn’s life. These personal narratives reveal striking commonalities—not just among those who came of age in the early 2010s, but across generations as well as genders.
