New York City
FLAX (France Los Angeles Exchange) curates a trailblazing performance — free and open to all — at iconic Grand Park, managed by the Music Center. Titled The distance is beautiful. La distance la plus courte entre deux points n’est pas une ligne droite, the performance marks a one-of-a-kind collaboration between FLAX’s first artist-in-residence for 2017, Lola Gonzàlez, winner of the prestigious Prix Meurice 2016; award-winning dancer and choreographer Oguri, credited with redefining Butoh dance; and composer Paul Chavez, known for creating immersive sonic environments for theater and dance. Inspired by the complex landscape of the city, the dance performance enlists the participation of 60 professional and nonprofessional performers, exploring highly topical themes of community and identity. Echoing recent unrest around the world, the groups will march through the corridors of downtown to gather at Grand Park.
