Damn Yankees features the wonderful songs by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross, including “You’ve Gotta Have Heart,” “Whatever Lola Wants, Lola Gets” and “Two Lost Souls”; based on Douglass Wallop’s novel The Year The Yankees Lost The Pennant.

One man’s obsession with baseball is tested as Joe Boyd promises to sell his soul to the devil if his beloved Washington Senators can beat the New York Yankees in 1950. “Mr. Applegate” obliges, sending the now 22 year old superstar to provide ‘one good long ball hitter’ for his team – at the expense of his soul if he doesn’t return home before 9 on the night of the final game. As Joe realizes what he has jeopardized, Applegate tries to stop him from escaping, using his best temptress Lola and all the tricks of his trade. But Joe’s love for his wife at last becomes more important to him than the pennant. Lola, impressed with his choice, works against her boss, and good triumphs over evil with a grand slam win by curtain’s fall.
