Our Place Theatre Project presents their seventh annual African American Theatre Festival, featuring four different nights of dramatic theatre by African American playwrights, poets, actors, and dancers, directed by Jacqui Parker.

From the Mississippi Delta

A true story based on the life of the playwright, From the Mississippi Delta is a twenty year journey told in the story of three women. From rape to prostitution to earning her doctorates from the University of Minnesota, Dr. Holland’s story is tragic, sometimes funny, but always beautifully told with language that is lyrical and honest. Starring Jacqui Parker, Valerie Lee and Candace Lee.

Ode to Askia Toure

Running time: 2 hours, with 1 intermission

A Celebration through song, dance, and spoken word of selected pieces by Mr. Toure, directed by Jacqui Parker and Kortney Adams. Known for praising black women and all their beauty and splendor, Askia Toure has won numerous awards and is constantly sought after to speak at various college campuses and universities.

The Meeting

The Meeting tells of a fictional encounter between Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. One afternoon Malcolm X summons Doctor King to his hotel room in Harlem, where they discuss race and race relations, beginning a debate that leaves the audience respecting both of these great men and their different methods for making a change in the fabric of American history. Starring Michael Green, Lawrence Winslow and Ron Wilkes.

Speak, Youth Poetry Contest
February 10 at 2:00pm
Running time: 2 hours, with 1 intermission

Performing the last Saturday of the festival, Speak hopes to uncover the best 100 youth poets (ages 16 – 25) in the Boston Metro area. After a process of performance eliminations, the final ten perform and the winner receives $1,000.00.

All shows are recommended for audiences age 10 and older.
