Broadway's Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike Headed to Berkeley Rep; Other Shows Also on Season's Slate
Obie Award winner Christopher Durang's hit comedy, directed by Richard E.T. White, will kick off the company's season.
Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, playwright Christopher Durang's currently running Broadway hit, will play Berkeley Repertory Theatre this fall. The production, which will be helmed by director Richard E.T. White, will open at the Roda Theatre on September 25.
Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike is a take on Uncle Vanya, The Seagull, and the other classic plays of Anton Chekhov, that follows Vanya and his adopted sister Sonia as they endure a visit from their movie-star sister and her new boy toy. A prophecy-sprouting cleaning woman and a youthful visitor named Nina throw the visit into even more of a tailspin.
Christopher Durang's plays also include The Marriage of Bette and Boo, Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All For You, and Beyond Therapy, among others.
Berkeley Rep artistic director Tony Taccone said of the season-opening production, "I'm always looking for a way to start the season with a show that celebrates life, and this will be a really wild and fun ride."
The Berkeley Repertory Theatre 2013-2014 season will also include The Pianist of Willesden Lane, true story of war-torn Europe by Mona Golabek and Hershey Felder. In addition, the season will feature Kneehigh's (The Wild Bride) West Coast premiere of Tristan & Yseult. The New Year will kick off with the world premiere of The House That Will Not Stand by Marcus Gardley, directed by Patricia McGregor. Following will be Dario Fo's Accidental Death of an Anarchist and a Jonathan Moscone-directed production of the recent New York hit Tribes by Nina Raine. Tony Taccone and Tony Kushner will end the season by teaming up on The Intelligent Homosexual's Guide to Capitalism and Socialism with a Key to the Scriptures.
Berkeley Repertory Theatre is a Tony Award-winning Bay Area nonprofit theater. Berkeley Rep has birthed shows that have gone on to win a total of five Tony Awards, seven Obie Awards, nine Drama Desk Awards, one Grammy Award, and many other honors.
