David Bowie Writing New Musical Based on The Man Who Fell to Earth
Lazarus, a new musical by David Bowie and Tony winner Enda Walsh (Once) will be part of the 2015-16 season at New York Theatre Workshop. It will begin performances in winter 2015.
Inspired by the novel The Man Who Fell to Earth, Lazarus features a host of new Bowie songs, as well as new arrangements of previously recorded tunes. Walsh pens the script and Ivo van Hove (Scenes From a Marriage) directs.
The work centers on Thomas Newton, an extraterrestrial who lands on Earth while looking for ways to send water to his drought-plagued planet. Bowie famously played the role in Nicolas Roeg's 1976 screen adaptation, but he is not expected to appear in the stage production.
As previously announced, the off-Broadway mainstay's season will also include the new play Fondly, Collette Richland, a collaboration between dramatist Sybil Kempson and the troupe Elevator Repair Service. Directed by John Collins, the work follows a couple summoned to an Alpen hotel with several mysterious guests and workers, only to return home and find that everything has changed.
