South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone are planning to adapt their Tony Award-winning musical The Book of Mormon into a movie, according to EW.com.
While there are no firm plans for the film, Parker told the site that they would like to make one in “in several years.”
The musical, which is co-authored by Parker, Stone and Robert Lopez, follows a pair of mismatched Mormon boys sent on a mission to a place that’s about as far from Salt Lake City as you can get. The stage production is co-directed by Parker and Casey Nicholaw, who also serves as the production’s choreographer.
The Broadway production won nine 2011 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and is currently running at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre. The national tour will launch at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, in August of 2012.
