The WTFs: Hedwig's Lena Hall Snuck a My Little Pony Quote Into Her 2014 Tony Acceptance Speech

What would this year on Broadway have been without a badass Bronie to call our own?

As 2014 draws to a close, TheaterMania looks back on some of the most jaw-dropping stories of the year with the 2014 WTFs.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch swept the 2014 Tony Awards, with accolades including Best Revival of a Musical and Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical for Neil Patrick Harris. But perhaps the best Hedwig Tony moment was Lena Hall's win for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical. Hall received the recognition for her performance as Yitzhak, Hedwig's repressed former drag queen husband, but her charming speech was anything but subdued.

The emotional moment gave Hall a chance to breathlessly thank her Hedwig team, her family (including her unborn niece, "I don't know what her name is yet!"), and her every other friend or acquaintance. But mostly, it offered her a chance to proclaim that "Friendship is magic!"

During interviews in the pressroom later that evening, Hall confirmed that the 3-word mantra that closed her speech was, in fact, a reference to Hasbro Studios' animated television series My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, a show which has garnered many adult fans — including one Tony winner.
