The Princess Bride Musical Will Premiere in Chicago Next Summer

The Broadway-bound musical based on the 1987 film The Princess Bride will premiere in Chicago at the James M. Nederlander Theatre next summer, July 19-August 22, 2027.

The musical features a book by Tony Award winners Bob Martin and Rick Elice and music and lyrics by Oscar winners Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, known for writing the music of Frozen. The production will be directed by Alex Timbers and choreographed by Andy Blankenbuehler.

Adapted for the screen by William Goldman from his 1973 novel, The Princess Bride follows the adventure of Westley to save his childhood love, Buttercup, after she’s kidnapped. The film version, directed by Rob Reiner, starred Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Chris Sarandon, Christopher Guest, Mandy Patinkin, Wallace Shawn, Billy Crystal, Carol Kane, and André the Giant.

The Princess Bride had previously been developed as a stage musical by Goldman and Tony Award-winning composer and lyricist Adam Guettel, but the project was abandoned after a reported rights’ dispute between the two writers. In 2019, it was announced that the musical would have a score by David Yazbek.

Casting for the production will be announced at a later date.
