Tony winner Stephen Karam has adapted the Chekhov classic.
Tony winner Stephen Karam's brand-new adaptation of Anton Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard opens today at Roundabout Theatre Company's American Airlines Theatre. The revival production is directed by Simon Godwin and stars Oscar nominee Diane Lane as Madame Ranevskaya, the noblewoman who returns to her family estate after a five-year absence.
The cast also features Tony winner Chuck Cooper (Pischick), Tavi Gevinson (Anya), Tony winner John Glover (Gaev), two-time Drama Desk Award winner Celia Keenan-Bolger (Varya), Harold Perrineau (Lopakhin), and Tony winner Joel Grey (Firs), along with Kyle Beltran, Tina Benko, Susannah Flood, Maurice Jones, Quinn Mattfeld, Peter Bradbury, Philip Kerr, Lise Bruneau, Jacqueline Jarrold, Ian Lassiter, and Carl Hendrick Louis.
The creative team includes Scott Pask (sets), Michael Krass (costumes), Donald Holder (lights), Christopher Cronin (sound), Jonathan Goddard (movement), and Nico Muhly (original music).
The Cherry Orchard focuses on a family on the edge of ruin, and a country on the brink of revolution. The story follows Lyubov Ranevskaya (Lane) and her family's return to their fabled orchard to forestall its foreclosure.
