Sing Street Musical Adaptation Sets World Premiere
New York Theatre Workshop has announced three productions set for its 2019-20 season.
The season will begin in the fall with the New York premiere of Mfoniso Udofia's runboyrun, directed by Loretta Greco, and In Old Age, directed Awoye Timpo. The two plays will be performed together as one evening of work. They join Udofia's nine-part saga, The Ufot Cycle, building on the 2017 productions of Sojourners and Her Portmanteau, which celebrate the tenacious matriarch of a Nigerian family.
The season continues with the world premiere of Sing Street, a new musical based on the motion picture written and directed by John Carney (Once, Begin Again). Sing Street features a book by Tony winner Enda Walsh (Once, Lazarus), music and lyrics by Carney and Gary Clark (front man of Danny Wilson), direction by Tony winner Rebecca Taichman (Indecent), and choreography by Sonya Tayeh (Hundred Days).
The 2019-20 season will also include Sanctuary City, written by Pulitzer Prize winner Martyna Majok (Cost of Living) and directed by Rebecca Frecknall (Summer and Smoke).
Two additional productions for the 2019-20 season will be announced at a later date, as well as performance schedules, casting, and full creative teams.
