Wheelock Family Theatre presents a recent classic fairy tale.
Shrek the Musical, begins its run tonight at the Wheelock Family Theatre. The title character, Shrek, is a loner and an ogre, living contentedly by himself. One day, however, as fairy tale creatures are forced out of the kingdom, they begin to encroach on his land. In an effort to save his home, he embarks on an adventure to rescue a beautiful princess, with only garrulous donkey as a companion. Along the way he encounters many fairy tale favorites, including the ginger bread man, Robin Hood, and even a fire-breathing dragon.
Based on the DreamWorks Animation Motion Picture and the book by William Steig, the musical features book and lyrics by David Lindsay Abaire and music by Jeanine Tesori. The cast features Christopher Chew as Shrek, Shonna Cirone as Fiona, Maurice Emmanuel Parent as Donkey, and Mark Linehan as Lord Farquaad. Shelley Bolman directs.
The creative team includes Matthew T. Lazure (set design), Charles G. Baldwin (costume design), Scott Bolman (lighting design), Matthew Stern (musical director), Patricia Manalo Bochnak (choreographer), and Marjorie Lusignan (props and puppet design).
Performances will run through May 17.
