Despite weather that made London look like Las Vegas, the annual “Stars in the Alley” celebration went on as scheduled in Shubert Alley yesterday, presented by the League of American Theatres and Producers in association with Continental Airlines. Among the Broadway types who performed for the damp but appreciative crowd was Man of La Mancha‘s Brian Stokes Mitchell, who sang — you guessed it! — “The Impossible Dream.”
Among the many other stars valiantly belting out songs from their shows in Shubert Alley yesterday: Deborah Gibson, Cabaret‘s new Sally Bowles…
…the cast of Urinetown, including Carolee Carmello (singing) and new recruit Tom Cavanagh (second from right)…
…Tom Wopat, a.k.a. Julian Marsh in 42nd Street…
…American Idol‘s Frenchie Davis, who recently joined the cast of Rent…
…Tammy Blanchard and Kate Reinders, singing “If Momma Was Married” from Gypsy…
…and The Look of Love‘s Liz Callaway, warming the crowd with the beautiful Burt Bacharach-Hal David ballad “Alfie.”
Sunday, June 1 was the date of the American Theatre Wing’s annual Tony Time Party at Sardi’s. Once again this year, the theme was “Covers On” as various Broadway stars introduced performances by their understudies, standbys, or alternates. Here is Hairspray‘s Marissa Jaret Winokur with her understudy, Shoshana Bean…
…and here’s Movin’ Out‘s Michael Cavanaugh (right) with his alternate, Wade Preston.
Also on hand for the Tony Time festivities: Nine co-stars Antonio Banderas and Chita Rivera…
…Hairspray co-stars Dick Latessa and Corey Reynolds…
…Enchanted April‘s Jayne Atkinson (right) with an old friend, Broadway and TV star Charlotte Rae…
…and the host of the evening’s entertainment, Mark Linn-Baker of A Year With Frog and Toad.
We leave you with two photos of the third of three guys named Cavenaugh who have recently had leading roles in Broadway musicals. (They all spell that name differently, which has really thrilled journalists!) Here is Urban Cowboy star Matt Cavenaugh, accompanied by Tom Kitt at the piano, in a soulful mood during his show at the Ars Nova Theater on Monday, June 2…
…and here’s Cavenaugh again, caught at a more “up” moment in the one-night-only performance.
