Patti LuPone and Christine Ebersole Star in War Paint

The new musical is directed by Michael Greif at the Goodman Theatre.

The world premiere of the new musical War Paint, starring Patti LuPone and Christine Ebersole, celebrates its opening night at Chicago's Goodman Theatre tonight, July 18. The show will run through August 21.

Inspired by Lindy Woodhead's book War Paint, as well as Ann Carol Grossman and Arnie Reisman's PBS documentary The Powder & the Glory, the show examines the ascent and rivalry of Helena Rubenstein and Elizabeth Arden, whose 50-year tug-of-war gave birth to an industry. Michael Greif helms the production and Christopher Gattelli (The King and I) choreographs. The show features lyrics by Michael Korie, music by Scott Frankel, and book by Doug Wright.

LuPone takes on the role of Rubenstein and Ebersole playa Arden, with John Dossett as Arden's husband, Tommy Lewis, and Douglas Sills as Harry Fleming, Rubeinstein's confident. The company also features Mary Ernster (The House of Martin Guerre), Leslie Donna Flesner (An American in Paris), David Girolmo (The House of Martin Guerre), Joanna Glushak (A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder), Chris Hoch (Matilda The Musical), Mary Claire King (Catch Me If You Can), Steffanie Leigh (Gigi), Erik Liberman (The Hunchback of Notre Dame), Barbara Marineau (A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder), Stephanie Jae Park (The King and I), and Angel Reda (Chicago).
