Musical Based on James St. James Memoir Party Monster to Hit A.R.T.
So reads the cover of James St. James’ Disco Bloodbath (now titled Party Monster), a memoir about his life as a Manhattan Club Kid in the early 90s, and the basis for the new Retrop Productions musical, CLUBLAND: The Monster Pop Party. The show, written by Andrew Barret Cox (Pokemon: The 90’s Rock Show), will play at American Repertory Theatre’s Oberon from April 11-12.
CLUBLAND is designed to be a wholly immersive experience that mirrors the real life events that took place around the rise to fame of Club Kid Michael Alig, a friend of James’, and Alig’s subsequent murder of fellow club kid and drug dealer Angel Melendez.
The production will be directed by Jacob S. Porter (DARLING at Emerson College). Costume design will be by Haley Vigil, with lighting design by Grayson Breen.
“It has always been my dream to see my book be made into either a big Broadway musical or a Saturday morning cartoon,” St. James in a statement.
Party Monster was also made into a 2003 flim starring Macaulay Culkin and Seth Green and even featuring Marilyn Manson. For a just a taste of the recreated craziness of the 90s club scene, you can watch a clip below.
