On Wednesday, the initial three-week run sold out within hours of being put on sale.
A mere two days after being announced, Mike Birbiglia's new solo show, The New One, has already announced an extension. Originally set to close on August 11 at the Cherry Lane Theatre, it will now close on August 25.
The two-week extension comes after the initial three-week run sold out on Wednesday within hours of being put on sale. "I haven't seen anything like this since we produced Oh, Hello at the Cherry Lane," producer Mike Lavoie said in a statement. "It was then that we knew that we had a potential hit Broadway show and that's exactly what happened. Looks like Broadway may be in the future for The New One as well."
Birbiglia describes the solo show as follows: "I hate it when people tell me what anything is about or really any details at all. Last year I loved Lady Bird, Get Out, and The Big Sick and my greatest gift to my friends was to tell them to see those movies and don't read anything about them. So that's what I'm telling the people interested in this show. If you liked my other shows and movies, I think you'll love The New One."
Directed by Seth Barrish, who helmed Birbiglia's Thank God for Jokes, My Girlfriend's Boyfriend, and Sleepwalk With Me, the production will have set design by Beowulf Borritt. It is produced by Joseph Birbiglia and Lavoie.
