Mark White will play the title character and Josh Darcy will play Fred “Spider” Rowe when Jeff Merrifield’s Hit Me! The Life and Rhymes of Ian Dury plays the West End’s Garrick Theatre, running September 9-11 as part of a new U.K. tour, according to a report on Whatsonstage.com.
The production will come to London after a run at the Gilded Balloon in Edinburgh, where it will play August 4-30 as part of the Edinburgh Fringe.
The piece focuses on Dury, the Blockheads’ lead singer, and explores the highs and lows of his career and life story. Hit Me! also investigates the relationship between Dury and ex-con Rowe, his minder, tour manager and loyal friend. It features many of Dury’s songs, including “Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick” and “Reasons To Be Cheerful.”
