The Public Theater has announced casting for the world premiere of Girl, Interrupted, written by Martyna Majok. The new stage adaptation will feature music by Aimee Mann from her 2021 album Queens of the Summer Hotel, with choreography by Tony winner Sonya Tayeh and direction by Jo Bonney.
Girl, Interrupted will run May 13-June 21, with an opening night on June 4, in the Public’s Martinson Hall.
Based on the memoir by Susanna Kaysen, Girl, Interrupted is about Susanna, who admits herself to a psychiatric hospital, following a 15-minute session with a doctor she’d never met, and forms unexpected bonds with the young women inside as they search for connection and a way forward.
The cast includes Ta’Rea Campbell as Valerie, Gabi Campo as Tori, Juliana Canfield as Susanna, Manoel Felciano as Man/Musician, King Princess as Lisa, Mia Pak as Grace, Katherine Reis as Daisy, Sally Shaw as Polly, Emily Skinner as Dr. Wick, and Lauren Jeanne Thomas as Judy/Musician. Understudies are Leela Bassuk, Eileen Doan, Gunnar Manchester, Anna Roman, and Rachel Stern.
The production will feature scenic design by dots, costume design by Sarah Laux, lighting design by Heather Gilbert, sound design and composition by Dan Moses Schreier, hair and wig design by J. Jared Janas, prop management by Claire M. Kavanah, orchestrations and music supervision by Todd Almond, and music direction by Andrea Grody.
The National Alliance on Mental Illness of New York City (NAMI-NYC), which provides free and accessible mental health services, will support the production.
