Jan Maxwell Is Retiring From Stage Acting

Broadway and off-Broadway favorite Jan Maxwell is retiring from the theater, the actress revealed in an interview with Time Out. Maxwell is currently starring in Potomac Theatre Project (PTP/NYC) theater's Scenes From an Execution at Atlantic Stage 2 and plans for the role to be her last onstage.

"I’m retiring from theater," Maxwell told Time Out. "The kinds of roles I was being offered were just…I’d been there and done that, and I just didn’t want to do that anymore. If I could do television and film just to keep the health insurance going, that would be great."

The actress went on to reflect on her impressive career and look forward at her future plans, saying, "I’ve been extremely lucky to have had a multifaceted life in the theater… I think theater saves people’s lives and it’s wonderful. This is just a personal choice for me. I’ve been doing a lot of traveling in the last couple of years, and I want to travel more. There are things I want to see and do."

Jan Maxwell is a five-time Tony Award nominee whose recent Broadway roles have included Maria in Lend Me a Tenor and Phyllis Rogers Stone in Follies. Her recent television work has included regular roles on Gossip Girl and The Divide.

PTP/NYC is an off-Broadway theater committed to creating "socially and politically acute theater" for the 21st century. Howard Barker's Scenes From an Execution deals with the complex relationship between the artist and the state. It follows Galactia (Maxwell), a 15th-century Venetian painter who is commissioned by the state of Venice to portray the naval battle of Lepanto.
