Zac Efron, star of the popular Disney TV film High School Musical, has been inked to play teen heartthrob Link Larkin in the film version of the Broadway musical Hairspray, according to published reports.
Hairspray is set to begin filming in September, under the direction of Adam Shankman. The film’s cast already includes John Travolta as Edna Turnblad, Nicole Blonsky as Tracy Turnblad, Amanda Bynes as Penny Pingleton, and Queen Latifah as Motormouth Maybelle. Additional principal casting should be announced shortly.
Efron, who will turn 19 in October, also starred in the TV series Summerland. His other film and television credits include episodes of ER, CSI: Miami, and Heist, and he recently completed the TV movie If You Lived Here, You’d Be Home Now.
