Colman Domingo, Anne Washburn, and many other artists were announced at last night’s annual season kick-off event.
At its annual season kick-off party at GrowNYC's Project Farmhouse last night, SPACE on Ryder Farm announced the roster for its 2019 season. SPACE — a nonprofit residency program and organic farm located on a 224-year-old family homestead in Putnam County, New York — will support artists and activists through seven residency programs from June to October: The Working Farm, Family Residency, Creative Solutions Symposium, Creative Residency, Film Lab, Greenhouse Residency, and Institutional Residency.
The 2019 residents include New York Times bestselling writer Rebecca Traister (Good and Mad); Tony-nominated actor, writer, and director Colman Domingo (Fear the Walking Dead); MacArthur "Genius" playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins (An Octoroon); writer and genealogist Jennifer Mendelsohn (#resistancegenealogy); New York Times bestselling author, illustrator, and performer Rupi Kaur (Milk and Honey); Whiting Award-winning playwright Anne Washburn (Shipwreck); multiple Obie Award-winning playwright and actor David Greenspan (The Argument); Susan Smith Blackburn Prize-winning playwright and activist Sheila Callaghan (Showtime's Shameless); performer and playwright Shakina Nayfack (Hulu's Difficult People); Obie Award-winning composer and performer Heather Christian (Animal Wisdom); actor and writer Frankie J. Alvarez (HBO's Looking); Tony-winning actor Gabriel Ebert (Matilda the Musical); Obie Award-winning stage and film director Leah C. Gardiner (If Pretty Hurts Ugly Must Be a Muhfucka); playwright and Broadway actor Keith Randolph Smith (Lockdown); writer, songwriter, and performer Grace McLean (Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812); musical duo the Bengsons (The Lucky Ones); devising theater company the Debate Society; artist and culture worker service organization the Field; theater collective National New Play Network; the undocumented youth-led New York State Leadership Council; and DC-based Justice for Muslims Collective.
SPACE is deeply committed to the belief that inclusion, equity, support, and radical hospitality are not only important to creating art, but are vital in creating dialogue that leads to lasting change. In support of these values, all individual and small group residences are provided at no cost to participants, and SPACE grants at least 50 percent of residencies to persons of color and underrepresented voices each season.
