Full cast and creative team have been announced for Theatre for a New Audience’s production of Nigerian playwright Biyi Bandele’s Oroonoko, to run February 2-March 9 at the Duke on 42nd Street. The production, which will open officially on February 10, will be directed by Kate Whoriskey.
The play is adapted from Aphra Behn’s novella about an African prince and his wife who are sold into slavery by their own people. Oroonooko premiered in London in 1999 by the Royal Shakespeare Company.
The cast features Albert Jones, Toi Perkins, Che Ayende, David Barlow, Gregory Derelian, John Douglas Thompson, Ira Hawkins, Leroy McClain, Christen Simon, Jordan C. Haynes, Ezra Knight, and Graeme Malcolm. The drums will be played by Mar Gueye.
The creative team includes Juwon Ogunbe (original music), Warren Adams (choreography), John Arnone (sets), Emilio Sosa (costumes), Donald Holder (lighting), Fabian Obispo (sound), and Rick Sordelet (fight choreography). Whoriskey’s credits include Fabulation and Massacre.
