Daniel Beaty, Pat Hazell, Avi Hoffman and More Set for Penguin Rep’s 2009 Season

Penguin Rep Theatre in Stony Point, New York, has announced selections for its 2009 season.

The Mainstage season will open with the world premiere of Our Lady of South Division Street (May 15-June 7), a new comedy by Tom Dudzick, directed by Joe Brancato. Next up will be The Wonder Bread Years (June 26-July 19), a humorous salute to Baby Boomer culture from former Seinfeld writer Pat Hazell, who also directs. Carter W. Lewis’s comedy Women Who Steal (August 7-30), directed by SuzAnne Barabas, is about a pair of restless middle-aged women on a riotous joy ride. The season will conclude with Brancato’s production of award-winning writer/performer Daniel Beaty’s new musical play Breath and Imagination (October 2-25), about world-renowned African-American vocalist Roland Hayes.

Special events at the Cultural Arts Center at SUNY Rockland Community College will include the New York premiere of Avi Hoffman’s Still Jewish After All These Years (September 26), which is a look back on his 40 years as a professional performer, as well as writer/director Jeffrey Solomon’s play De Novo (November 21), which tells the true story of Edgar Chocoy and other undocumented youth, followed by a discussion with the creative team and immigration experts.

Penguin will also present its second annual Children’s Theatre Festival, the “Play with Your Food” series of new play readings, and Penguin Rep’s Annual Auction.
