Broadway League Announces 2012 National Education Grant Recipients

The Broadway League has announced the recipients for its 2012 National Education Grants, which will help these theaters and organizations develop and maintain educational programming associated with Touring Broadway productions.

Initiatives being awarded include the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia’s plan to pair young members of the local LGBT community with older mentors for workshops and a talkback in conjunction with of the musical Priscilla, Queen of the Desert; Seattle Theatre Group’s partnering with non-profit organizations Deaf Spotlight and Little Bit to explore the themes of War Horse with deaf teens and adults; and Tennessee Performing Arts Center‘s exploration of themes from Disney’s The Lion King with 30 at-risk elementary students from Nashville’s Preston Taylor afterschool program.

Grants will also go to Fox Cities Performing Arts Center, Inc. in Appleton, WI (Lion King); Shea’s Performing Arts Center in Buffalo, NY (Blue Man Group); Civic Center of Greater Des Moines in Des Moines, IA (War Horse); Wharton Center for Performing Arts in East Lansing, MI (War Horse); Connecticut Association for the Performing Arts in New Haven, CT (Les Misérables); California Musical Theatre in Sacramento, CA (Billy Elliot); and Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts in West Palm Beach, FL (Mary Poppins).
