Chris Bauer, Chris Chalk, Margaret Colin, Stephen Lang, Trevor Long, and Jeremy Strong have been cast in John Patrick Shanley’s Defiance, which will play February 9-April 16 at Manhattan Theatre Club’s Stage I. Directed by Tony Award winner Doug Hughes, the production will open officially open on February 28.

First seen in a workshop production last summer at New York Stage & Film, Defiance is set on a United States Marine Corps base in North Carolina in 1971, where two officers — one black (Chalk) and one white (Lang) — are on a collision course over race, women, and the high cost of doing the right thing. The play is part of an intended trilogy of plays about American hiearchy that Shanley began with the Pulitzer Prize-winning Doubt, which was also directed by Hughes.

The show’s creative team includes John Lee Beatty (set design), Catherine Zuber (costume design), Pat Collins (lighting design), and David Van Tieghem (original music and sound design). Hughes directed A Naked Girl on the Appian Way and A Touch of the Poet this season for the Roundabout Theatre Company and is scheduled to helm Richard Greenberg’s A House in Town at Lincoln Center Theater this spring.

Bauer recently starred as Mitch in the Roundabout’s revival of A Streetcar Named Desire. Chalk’s stage credits include A Matter of Choice and Dutchmasters. Colin starred on Broadway inA Day in the Death of Joe Egg and Jackie, and Off-Broadway in Shanley’s Psycopathia Sexualis. Lang received a Tony Award nomination for The Speed of Darkness and has also been seen on Broadway in Death of a Salesman and A Few Good Men. Long’s stage credits include The Last Days of Judas Iscariot and In Arabia We’d All Be Kings. Strong has appeared Off-Broadway in such shows as Pearl and By the Bier.
