Restaurateur Elaine Kaufman Dies at 81

Elaine Kaufman, owner of the legendary restaurant Elaine’s, has died from complications stemming from emphysema. She was 81 years old.

Kaufman opened Elaine’s, which was located on Second Avenue and 88th Street in 1963. It became a hangout for celebrities, most notably Woody Alllen, and writers such as Norman Mailer, Kurt Vonnegut, Gay Talese, and Nora Ephron.

In addition, actress Elaine Stritch reportedly worked as a bartender there one summer.
