New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players Set City Center Season

The New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players will present its 33rd anniversary season of shows at City Center, January 5-14. The company will perform two of the most beloved operettas by WS Gilbert and Sir Arthur Sullivan, The Yeomen of the Guard and The Mikado, plus a special, one-night-only performance of The Rose of Persia.

The season will showcase such company regulars as Stephen Quint, Keith Jurosko, Richard Holmes, Angela Smith, Keith Jurosko, Laurelyn Watson, Michael Scott Harris, Louis Dall’Ava, David Wannen, and Kimberly Bennett. Albert Bergeret will direct the shows and will conduct a 25-piece orchestra.

The Yeomen of the Guard, or The Merryman and His Maid tells the story of a wrongly accused prisoner sitting in solemn silence on a cold dark dock; he’s doted upon by two girls who love him and visited by an out of work jester. The Mikado, or The Town of Titipu is the G&S favorite that features the beautiful schoolgirl Yum-Yum in a love triangle with Nanki-Poo, whom she loves, and Ko-Ko, to whom she is betrothed. The Rose of Persia, or The Story-Teller and the Slave is inspired by a story from The 1001 Nights; it tells the story of a group of slave girls and a Sultana named Rose-In-Bloom who attempt to escape the harem by concealing themselves in the home of a wealthy philanthropist named Hassan.
