Academy Award nominee Maggie Gyllenhaal (Crazy Heart) is following up her recent off-Broadway appearances in productions of Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya (2009) and Three Sisters (2011) at Classic Stage Company with a starring role in Penelope Skinner’s 2011 play The Village Bike as part of MCC‘s 2013-14 season. Gyllenhaal will take on the role of Becky, a married and pregnant schoolteacher with an overactive libido who decides to explore the countryside on a secondhand bike.

The Village Bike was originally produced in 2011 at the Royal Court Theater in London where Skinner won The Evening Standard’s award for most promising playwright. OBIE Award winner, two-time Drama Desk Award nominee, and director of the recent Broadway revival of Picnic, Sam Gold, will helm the production.

Performances are scheduled to begin on May 21, 2014 at the Lucille Lortel Theater with an official opening set for June 9.

MCC has also announced that the off-Broadway premiere of Robert Askins’ Hand to God will join its season, rounding out the list of 2013-14 productions previously announced. Moritz von Stuelpnagel will direct with Steven Boyer (Modern Terrorism) in the leading role.

The play will begin performances on February 20, 2014 with an official opening set for March 11, 2014.
