Kris Kristofferson, Rosanne Cash, Elvis Costello, and Sheryl Crow are among the artists participating in the recording of Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, John Mellencamp and Stephen King’s musical theater collaboration, according to a report on the author’s website.

Mellencamp and King have edited the initial three-hour program down to two hours and 10 minutes and anticipate further paring before producer T-Bone Burnett completes the tracks. When finished, the recording will be available in a novel book package containing the full text, two discs featuring the entire production of the spoken-word script and songs performed by the cast, and a third CD of the songs only.

The story involves turmoil within a family. Kristofferson and Cash will play the family’s mother and father. Their sons will be played by real-life brothers Dave Alvin and Phil Alvin, along with Will Daily and Mellencamp himself. Costello will play a satanic character known as “The Shape” and Crow will play Jenna.

Additional performers will include Neko Case (Anna), Joe Frazier (caretaker Dan Coker), and King himself (Uncle Steve). 24 star Glenn Morshower will narrate the piece.
