Kilmer to Play Moses in Ten Commandments Musical
Kilmer will head a cast of 50 in the United States premiere of the musical, which has been presented in Paris. The Ten Commandments features a score by film composer-music producer Patrick Leonard and lyrics by Emmy Award winner-Grammy Award nominee Maribeth Derry. The L.A. production will be directed by Robert Iscove and choreographed by Travis Payne. Based on the familiar story from the Bible's Book of Exodus that was memorably dramatized by Cecil B. DeMille in a 1956 Hollywood epic, The Ten Commandments tells the story of Moses's life and of how he led the Hebrews from captivity in Egypt.
Kilmer, who trained at Juilliard, is well known for his appearances in such movies as Top Secret, Top Gun, The Doors, Tombstone, and Batman Forever. He provided the voice of Moses for the 1998 animated film The Prince of Egypt. The actor's stage credits include Off-Broadway appearances in Slab Boys, Henry IV, Part 1, 'Tis Pity She's a Whore, and How It All Began; Kilmer also played the title role in Hamlet at the Colorado Shakespeare Festival.
