Betty Gilpin, John Horton, Jayne Houdyshell, Matt Letscher, and Heidi Schreck will star in the New York premiere of Julia Cho’s The Language Archive, to be presented by the Roundabout Theatre Company at the Harold and Miriam Steinberg Center for Theatre, September 24-December 19, with an opening on October 17. Mark Brokaw will direct.

In the play, George (Letscher) is a man consumed with preserving and documenting the dying languages of far-flung cultures. Closer to home, though, language is failing him. He doesn’t know what to say to his wife, Mary (Schreck), to keep her from leaving him, and he doesn’t recognize the deep feelings that his lab assistant, Emma (Gilpin), has for him.

The design team will include Neil Patel (sets), Michael Krass (costumes), Marc McCullough (lights), and David Van Tieghem (sound).

The Language Archive won the 2010 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize awarded to an outstanding new English-language play by a woman. Cho was a finalist for the Blackburn Prize for her plays The Piano Teacher and 99 Histories. Among her other plays are Durango, The Winchester House, BFE, and The Architecture of Loss.
