Gypsy With LuPone, Benanti, Gaines to Open on Broadway in March

The classic musical
Gypsy will return to Broadway starring Patti LuPone, Laura Benanti, and Boyd Gaines, and directed by multiple Tony Award winner (and author of the musical) Arthur Laurents at the St. James Theatre on March 3, with an official opening on March 27. The production is based on the critically acclaimed New York City Center Encores! production which played City Center in July with the same stars. Additional casting will be announced at a later date.

The creative team will include James Youmans (scenic design), Martin Pakledinaz (costumes), Howell Binkley (lighting), Paul Huntley (hair), and Dan Moses Schreier (sound).

LuPone, who will play Mama Rose, was most recently seen on Broadway in Sweeney Todd, and won a Tony Award for her performance in the title role of Evita. Her other Broadway credits include Master Class, Anything Goes, Oliver!, Working, and The Old Neighborhood.

Benanti, who will play Louise, has appeared on Broadway in Swing! and Into the Woods, both of which earned her Tony Award nominations, as well asThe Sound of Music, Nine, and The Wedding Singer. Gaines, who will play Herbie, received the Drama Desk Award as Best Featured Actor in a Play for Journey’s End and wasd nominated for the Tony Award as Best Actor in a Play for that performance. He is a three-time Tony winner for Contact, She Loves Me, and The Sisters Rosensweig.
