Essential Voices USA, Larry Hochman to Take Part in The Composer Speaks

Essential Voices USA, Tony Award-winner Larry Hochman, and more will take part in the Thursday, May 10 edition of the The Composer Speaks program, held at 7pm at the Petrie Chapel at Hebrew Union College.

The concert will feature the world premiere of Hochman’s Prayer, a reworking of his Holocaust orchestral piece for piano and chamber musicians, along with selections from Songs of Freedom: A Celebration of Chanukah, an arrangement of Chanukah songs by Hochman, Judith Clurman, and Brian Stokes Mitchell.

The presentation will also include the world premiere of Cantor Bruce L. Ruben’s Circle of Life, and conclude with several works by Paul Schoenfield.

Hochman, who won a Tony Award for his orchestrations for The Book of Mormon, will serve as a pianist for the evening, along with Schoenfield, and William Test. Performers will include members of Essential Voices USA, singers from HUC, and instrumentalists Todd Palmer (clarinet), Kathryn Andersen (violin), Michael Dahlberg (cello), and Stacey Shames (harp).
