The current Broadway production of the classic Jule Styne-Stephen Sondheim-Arthur Laurents musical Gypsy at the Shubert Theatre has rescinded its closing notice and is slated to remain open indefinitely. Directed by Sam Mendes, the show stars Bernadette Peters, John Dossett, and Tammy Blanchard.

As detailed in a TheaterMania news item that was posted on February 2, Gypsy posted a closing notice for February 28, citing recent extreme weather conditions as having had a chilling effect on ticket sales. But, according to the show's press office, an improvement in business and concessions from everyone working on the show have convinced the producers that it is now possible to keep the bio-musical about celebrity stripper Gypsy Rose Lee running.

According to producer Robert Fox, "The outpouring of support for Gypsy has been remarkable. I am very proud of this production and I believe it should not close while there is an audience eager to see the extraordinary performances of Bernadette Peters and the entire company in Sam Mendes' exceptional staging of what I believe is the greatest of all Broadway musicals." Producer Ron Kastner added that "Everyone connected with the Gypsy company and the Shubert Organization immediately volunteered to help us get through this tough winter period. No one in the Broadway community expected this traditionally challenging season to be so rough. I'm thrilled that we have found a way to keep the Shubert lit with this fantastic show."
