Tony Award winner Chita Rivera will star in a Broadway revival of the musical, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, to be presented by Roundabout Theatre Company at Studio 54 in the Fall of 2012. Scott Ellis will direct, with musical direction by Paul Gemignani.

Featuring book, music & lyrics by Rupert Holmes, the musical murder mystery is based on an unfinished novel by Charles Dickens. Rivera will play Princess Puffer in this show in which everyone on stage is a suspect in the murder of young Edwin Drood–and it’s up to the audience to choose the killer.

The Roundabout has also announced that Sam Gold will direct a Broadway revival of Picnic at the company’s American Airlines Theatre, with performances to begin Winter 2013. In this American classic, the arrival of a handsome young drifter sends the women of a small town in the Heartland reeling, especially the beautiful Madge.

Off-Broadway, Ellis will direct the world premiere of Steven Levenson’s The Unavoidable Disappearance of Tom Durnin at the Laura Pels Theatre next season. In the play, a man who did time for his white-collar crime is determined to win back the respect and position he believes he deserves. The play was commissioned by Roundabout following the 2008 Roundabout Underground production of Levenson’s play, The Language of Trees.
