The 2009-2010 Outer Critics Circle Awards were held on Thursday, May 27 at Sardi’s Restaurant.
Memphis and La Cage Aux Folles each earned four awards, including Outstanding New Broadway Musical and Outstanding Revival of a Musical, respectively. In addition, Terry Hodges won for his direction of La Cage and Douglas Hodge won Outstanding Actor in a Musical.
Memphis co-authors Joe DiPietro and David Bryan won Outstanding Score; Montego Glover won for Outstanding Actress in a Musical — a category in which she tied with Catherine Zeta-Jones (A Little Night Music); and Sergio Trujillo won Outstanding Choreography — a category in which he tied with Bil T. Jones (Fela!).
Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson and The Scottsboro Boys tied for Outstanding Off-Broadway Musical; John Logan’s Red won Outstanding New Broadway Play; and Geoffrey Nauffts’ Next Fall won the John Gassner Award. Michael Wilson was named Outstanding Director of a Play for Horton Foote’s The Orphans’ Home Cycle, which also won Outstanding New Off-Broadway Play.
Fences‘ Denzel Washington and Viola Davis won the awards as Outstanding Actor in a Play and Outstanding Actress in a Play, respectively, and the production won Outstanding Revival of Play. In addition, Jon Michael Hill (Superior Donuts) and Jan Maxwell (Lend Me a Tenor) won as Outstanding Featured Actor and Actress in a Play; Levi Kreis (Million Dollar Quartet) and Katie Finneran (Promises, Promises) won as Outstanding Featured Actor Actress in a Musical; and Carrie Fisher won the Outstanding Solo Performance Award for Wishful Drinking.
Presenters at the event included Dylan Baker, Jeff Daniels, Lucy Liu, Janet McTeer, and Frank Langella.
