The play is a depiction of a father, mother, and son whose complex and strained family dynamic becomes sadly clear after the son returns from a three-year stint in the army.
Martin Sheen, who portrays the father in the production, played the role of the son in the 1964 Broadway production as well as the 1968 film version.
Sheen's sons, actors Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez, were on hand for the opening. Oscar winner Patricia Neal, who also appeared in the film, was in attendance at the opening as well.
Many other celebrities were on hand for the opening, including Felicity Huffman, Ted Danson, Mary Steenburgen, David Mamet, Rebecca Pidgeon, Harry Groener, Buck Henry, Chris Messina, Clark Gregg, Jennifer Grey, and Sharon Lawrence.
